What Really Happened...
The Native American vs. European Conflict

In this lesson we will teach High School level U.S. History focuses on the conflict between the Native American population and the European explorers. We will use media analysis and and evaluation to compare how the media portrays this conflict, and compare and contrast what really happened to the media portrayal.
North Carolina Essential Standard:
AH1.H.1.2 Use Historical Comprehension to:
1. Reconstruct the literal meaning of a historical passage.
2. Differentiate between historical facts and historical interpretations.
3. Analyze data in historical maps.
4. Analyze visual, literary and musical sources.
Using the North Carolina Essential Standard above we will led students through a lesson that will incorporate analysis of historical documents and the analysis of different historical interpretations.

- Students will be required to research and find historical passages from the European exploration of America, focuses on their views of the native population.
- Then as a class we will watch and conduct analysis and evaluation of a Pocahontas movie clip. We will compare to what is shown in the animation clip to the actual attitudes portrayed in the historical passages the students found.
- During the analysis and evaluation of the video we will also discuss media literacy. Making the point to talk about why Disney and the people that made the Pocahontas movie chose what they did,
